On 22 May 2019 he was appointed as Federal Minister for the Interior of the Republic of Austria, replacing Herbert Kickl who was deposed from office by Federal President Alexander van der Bellen. Eckart Ratz was going to serve as a cabinet minister of the transitional government until the General Elections in fall 2019 but the new government has been crashed by most opposition parties.
