He reached the top makuuchi division in March 2017. In July 2017 he reached his highest rank, of maegashira 4, but he has only just returned after two extended injury layoffs caused his rank to plummet. He has a kinboshi, or gold star, for defeating a yokozuna. His unpredictable style has made him a favourite with tournament crowds.

In 2019, he won the Sanremo Music Festival with the song "Soldi", and went on to represent Italy in the Eurovision Song Contest 2019, finishing in 2nd place. His debut album, Gioventù bruciata, was released in February 2019 and debuted at number one on the Italian albums chart.

Simon Philip Yates is a British road and track racing cyclist, who currently rides for UCI WorldTeam Team BikeExchange. His twin brother is Adam Yates, who is also a professional cyclist. He won the gold medal in the points race at the 2013 Track Cycling World Championships. Following a doping ban in 2016, he won the young rider classification in the 2017 Tour de France and the general classification in the 2018 Vuelta a España. Yates has also won multiple stages at each of cycling's three grand tours.
