James FitzThomas FitzGerald, the Súgán Earl, was a pretender to the Earldom of Desmond. He derived his claim from being the eldest son of Thomas FitzGerald Ruadh, who in turn was the eldest son of James FitzGerald, 13th Earl of Desmond by Joan Roche, but this marriage was annulled and his father disherited for closeness of family relation as Joan was the 13th Earl's grandniece.
