Rutherford Birchard Hayes was the 19th president of the United States from 1877 to 1881, after serving in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Ohio. A lawyer and staunch abolitionist, he had defended refugee slaves in court proceedings during the antebellum years. He negotiated the political agreement to end federal support of Reconstruction.

Rutherford "Gus" Aris was a chemical engineer, control theorist, applied mathematician, and a Regents Professor Emeritus of Chemical Engineering at the University of Minnesota (1958–2005).

Rutherford Platt Hayes was an American librarian. Hayes was the third son of Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the United States. He attended Michigan State University and Cornell University, graduating in 1880. He also attended the Boston Institute of Technology.

Rutherford "Ruddy" Cravens is an American actor who primarily works on stage. He has been in three Oscar-winning films: Ray (2004), No Country for Old Men (2007), and Get Out (2017). Rutherford Cravens appears annually in the Houston Shakespeare Festival.
