Ernest William Hornung was an English author and poet known for writing the A. J. Raffles series of stories about a gentleman thief in late 19th-century London. Hornung was educated at Uppingham School; as a result of poor health he left the school in December 1883 to travel to Sydney, where he stayed for two years. He drew on his Australian experiences as a background when he began writing, initially short stories and later novels.

Ernest Thomas Sinton Walton was an Anglo-Irish physicist and Nobel laureate for his work with John Cockcroft with "atom-smashing" experiments done at Cambridge University in the early 1930s, and so became the first person in history to split the atom.

Sir Ernest Woodford Birch, was a British colonial administrator who served as the eighth British resident of Perak (1904–1911).

Ernest Vessiot was a French mathematician. He was born in Marseille, France and died in La Bauche, Savoie, France. He entered the École Normale Supérieure in 1884.
