Mariano Lorenzo Melgar Valdivieso (1790–1815) was a Peruvian revolutionary, poet, artist, translator and patriot soldier during the Peruvian War of Independence from Spain. As a poet, Melgar became one of the most prominent romantic poets of Peru in the 19th century history, best known for his poetic love songs known as yaravíes. He is often considered to be the equivalent of the Ecuadorian José Joaquín Olmedo and the Cuban José Martí as patriots of their respective countries.

Alba Nora Gúnera Osorio was a Honduran politician and wife of General Juan Alberto Melgar, the Honduran military Head of State from 1975 to 1978. After being elected mayor of Tegucigalpa, she ran for presidency for the National Party in 1997 elections, but lost to Liberal Party nominee Carlos Roberto Flores. She served as the 6th Vice-President of the National Congress of Honduras during the 2010-2014 legislature.

Julián Artemio Sánchez Melgar, is a Spanish judge and prosecutor currently serving as magistrate of the Second Chamber of the Supreme Court. He was the 90th Attorney General of Spain from December 2017 to June 2018. Because of being attorney general he was also member of the Council of State. He is considered a Magistrate with a conservative profile.

Rafael Lapesa Melgar (1908–2001) was a Spanish philologist, a historian of language and of Spanish literature.
