Hanno the Navigator was a Carthaginian explorer of the fifth century BC, best known for his naval exploration of the western coast of Africa. The only source of his voyage is a Greek periplus. According to some modern analyses of his route, Hanno's expedition could have reached as far south as Gabon; however, others have taken him no further than southern Morocco.

Botwulf of Thorney was an English abbot and saint. He is regarded as the patron saint of boundaries, and by extension, of trade and travel, as well as various aspects of farming. His feast day is celebrated either on 17 June (England) or 25 June (Scotland), and his translation falls on 1 December.

Duncan Odom is a research group leader at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg, and the Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute at the University of Cambridge. Previously he was as an associate faculty member at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute from 2011 to 2018.
