Lieselott Herforth was a German physicist and politician. She was a member of the State Council and the People's Chamber of the GDR and she was the first rector of a university in Germany.

Selmar Schonland, originally spelt Schönland, the founder of the Department of Botany at Rhodes University, was a German immigrant, who came to the Eastern part of the Cape Colony in 1889 to take up an appointment as curator of the Albany Museum. He came to Grahamstown via a doctorate at the University of Hamburg and a post at Oxford University. Working under Prof. Sir Isaac Bayley Balfour and Prof. Sydney Howard Vines, he developed an interest in the family Crassulaceae and contributed an account of this group to Engler & Prantl's Natürl. Pflanzenfamilien.

Friedrich (Fritz) Schöll was a German classical philologist, known for his editions of Plautus, Varro and Cicero. He was the son of archaeologist Gustav Adolf Schöll (1805–1882) and the brother of philologist Rudolf Schöll (1844–1893).

Steffen Sartor is a German luger who competed from 1992 to 2004. He was a doubles specialised who formed a successful partnership with Steffen Wöller during the 1990s and early 2000. He won five medals at the FIL World Luge Championships with one gold, three silvers, and one bronze.

John Augustus Roebling was a German-born American civil engineer. He designed and built wire rope suspension bridges, in particular the Brooklyn Bridge, which has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark.
