Gusev has been a professional since 2004, spending two years each at Team CSC and Discovery Channel before moving to Astana in 2008. On 25 July 2008 team Astana fired Gusev for showing "abnormal" values during an internal doping check, a decision the Court of Arbitration for Sport found to be unjust in a ruling the following June.
