He played college baseball for Stanford and was the St. Louis Cardinals' first-round selection in the 2012 Major League Baseball draft. He made his major league debut on July 21, 2015, and was the Cardinals' organization Player of the Year that season. The Cardinals traded him to the Athletics after the 2017 season.
