He was a decathlete and football star who was one of the first Black American players in the National Football League in the postwar era. After football, he went on to become a film actor, where he was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Spartacus in 1960. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II.

He played college football at the University of Richmond and was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round of the 2008 NFL Draft. He also played for the Washington Redskins, New Orleans Saints, Florida Blacktips, New Orleans Saints, and San Francisco 49ers. In 2020, he was named a director of alumni relations for the Washington Football Team.

At a height of 1.96 m (6'5") tall, he plays at the shooting guard position. After graduating from Maranatha High School, in Pasadena, California, he played college basketball for the Oregon Ducks. While at Oregon, he was nicknamed "Mr. March" for his clutch play during the NCAA tournament. He is also a member of the senior Greek national team.

She is best known for her starring role as Janet in the NBC sitcom The Good Place (2016–2020), for which she was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
