Hiromoto Okubo is a former Nippon Professional Baseball catcher. After playing, he turned to managing and coaching. In 2015, Hiromoto was promoted from Rakuten's farm team manager to Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles full-time manager. He only lasted one season, however, as he resigned after the team again finished in last place.

He previously served as an agent for the Food and Drug Administration, investigating the use of steroids in professional sports. Before April 2008 he was a special agent for the Internal Revenue Service who investigated the use of steroids for over five years. Novitzky's work has been credited with "changing the face of sports."

Sugar is bisexual and non-binary, using both she/her and they/them pronouns, which has served as the inspiration for her to stress the importance of LGBT representation in art, especially in children's entertainment.
