Before federal politics, Blanchet was in provincial politics, serving as Parti Québécois Member of the National Assembly from the 2008 election until his defeat in the 2014 election. He was Quebec's Minister of Sustainable Development, Environment, Wildlife and Parks from December 2012 until his defeat in the 2014 election.
