Masatoyo was the second son of Takeda Nobutora's senior retainer, Kudō Toratoyo. He was first called Kudō Sukenaga. The family's fortunes fell when Toratoyo lost favor with Nobutora and was killed by him.

Naitō Jōsō was one of the principal disciples of Bashō, and himself also a respected haiku writer in the Genroku period of Japan. Originally, he was a samurai from Owari, but he had to leave military service due to ill health. Taking up the literary life, he became a devout disciple of Bashō, and when the Master died in 1694, Naito mourned him for a full three years, and remained his devout follower for the rest of his life.

Naitō Ienaga was a Japanese samurai of the Sengoku Period through Azuchi-Momoyama Period, who served the Tokugawa clan. He was the son of Naitō Kiyonaga. Ienaga served Tokugawa Ieyasu from a young age, and was famed for his skill with the bow. He assisted in the suppression of the Ikkō-ikki of Mikawa Province, and this earned him Ieyasu's trust.
