Zekarias Yohannes was an Eritrean Catholic bishop. He was born in Adigenú. He was ordained as a priest of Asmara on 2 June 1949, and was appointed both Auxiliary Bishop of Asmara and Titular Bishop of Barca on 29 January 1981. He was appointed Bishop of Asmara on 17 July 1984, a position he held until his retirement on 25 June 2001. Through much of his career he would have been considered an Ethiopian clergyman.

Ras Araya Selassie Yohannes (Tigrinya: አርአያ ሥላሴ ዮሐንስ, araya śəllase yohannəs; "horse name" Abba Deblaq; was a son of atse Yohannes IV from his wife Masitire Selassie, a daughter of a Muslim Afar chieftain whom he married after she was Christened. Araya was nominated Crown Prince.

Ras Mengesha Yohannes was governor of Tigray and a son of atse Yohannes IV. His mother was Welette Tekle Haymanot wife of dejazmach Gugsa Mercha. Ras Araya Selassie Yohannes was his older half brother. Prior to the Battle of Metemma, Mengesha Yohannes was considered to be a nephew of Emperor Yohannes IV. During the battle, the Emperor was mortally wounded and it was on his deathbed that Mengesha Yohannes was acknowledged as his "natural" son and designated as his heir. This created something of a succession problem.
