He played college football at Purdue University and professionally in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants and the Minnesota Vikings. Mitrione holds notable victories over Fedor Emelianenko, Roy Nelson, Derrick Lewis, Gabriel Gonzaga, and Kimbo Slice, and is known to knock out opponents with his right hand from a southpaw stance, despite being otherwise left-handed outside the ring.

Daniel Anthony Mitrione was a U.S. government torture advisor in Latin America who was kidnapped and executed by the Tupamaros guerrilla group fighting against the authoritarian government in Montevideo, Uruguay.
