He was one of the main Stavka representatives during World War II who was responsible for five to seven Soviet fronts. Despite his fervent political engagement and loyalty to the Communist Party, Mekhlis was criticized and reprimanded for his incompetent military leadership during World War II by various Soviet leaders, including Joseph Stalin.
