He is one of the greatest Chinese basketball players and scorers of this generation, and was set to join the NBA after a successful showing with the Dallas Mavericks in the 2017 NBA Summer League at the age of 23. However, repeated knee injuries sidelined him from play after stellar CBA seasons in 2016-17 and 2017-18, where he won back-to-back CBA MVPs. This included a magnificent run in the 2018 CBA playoffs, where he scored an average of 29.8 PPG. However, as of November 2019, Ding is still recovering from a string of foot and knee injuries and is currently unsigned.

Mao Yuanxin, also known as Li Shi, is a former Chinese politician. As the nephew of Chairman Mao Zedong, he acted as the liaison between Mao and the Communist Party's Central Committee in Mao's ailing years, when he was no longer able to regularly attend political functions. He was considered an ally to the radical political faction known as the Gang of Four. He was arrested soon after Mao's death after a political struggle ensued, and was sentenced to prison.
