She married Charles Robert Jenkins, an American defector to North Korea, in 1980. Charles Robert Jenkins died in 2017, Hitomi currently lives in Japan with her children.

He was a prominent entrepreneur in Meiji, Taishō and early Shōwa period Japan, responsible for transforming Mitsui into a zaibatsu through the creation of a general trading company, Mitsui Bussan. He also established a newspaper, the Chugai Shōgyō Shimpō (中外商業新報), which was later renamed the Nihon Keizai Shimbun.
