Ethnically German and born in the Soviet Union, Neustädter played for Germany at various youth levels, then being capped twice by the Germany national football team in 2012 and 2013. He switched allegiance to Russia in 2016.

They also wrote the screenplays for The Spectacular Now, based on the novel by Tim Tharp, The Fault in Our Stars, based on the best-selling novel by John Green, and Paper Towns, based on another novel by Green.
